In 2008, during a visit to my grandmother in my hometown of Nsiana, I witnessed a severe accident in Antoakrom where someone was injured while playing football.
The urgency and time it took to reach the nearest hospital, St Martin’s Hospital at Agorosum, deeply impacted me and highlighted the need for better healthcare in my community.
Motivated by this experience, I decided to build a hospital that would provide improved healthcare services to my community and its surrounding areas.
Without hesitation, I acquired a parcel of land for the project and immediately began construction.
From 2010 to 2012, we tirelessly worked on the construction of Prof Quarm Hospital. Despite my involvement in politics during that period, I had a dedicated team overseeing the project.
From 2014 to 2015, the construction was completed, marking a significant milestone in the realization of this vision.
Upon completing my political obligations in 2020, the time had come to officially inaugurate the hospital. With the gracious support of His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa, we were honored to have him commission the hospital.
Prof Quarm Hospital is a state-of-the-art medical facility with a capacity of 100 beds. It is designed based on the model of the ultra-modern Bermondsey Hospital in London, UK.
Having lived in the UK and worked as a teacher, I had the opportunity to experience the excellent healthcare provided by Bermondsey Hospital.
Inspired by their model, I contacted them, obtained their plans, and vowed to replicate the same model in my hometown.
During my time as a member of parliament, I noticed that many reported health issues within the community were related to goiter, hernia, malaria, and other respiratory conditions.
Therefore, upon the hospital’s opening, we initiated a program to provide free goiter and hernia surgeries. Each year, we dedicated one month to offer free surgeries to those in need who couldn’t afford medical attention.
The entire construction of the hospital was self-funded and it was borne out of 20-year proceeds from Prof Quarm publications. It stands as a testament to our commitment to providing quality healthcare and addressing the medical needs of the community.
We are proud to have built Prof Quarm Hospital as a symbol of improved healthcare access and excellence, and we continue to prioritize the well-being and health of the people we serve.
